Ontario Graduate Scholarships

The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program recognizes and supports excellence in graduate studies. The merit-based scholarship advances the studies and research of graduate students, who are driving discovery and seeking solutions to enhance the world.

This matching fund opportunity allows private sector partners to participate in the creation of scholarships for exceptional students for only one-third of the cost. Under the OGS program, an expendable contribution of $5,000 from Western alumni, friends and private partners will leverage an additional $10,000 in government funds to fully support one $15,000 award.

Awards are available to students in all disciplines of academic study. Read about how donor support has helped fund the future of some of Western's recent OGS recipients:

Tyler August, MSc'12 (Science)
Ryan Broll, PhD'14 (Social Science)
Heather Brown, PhD'13 (Health Sciences)
Jason Brown, PhD'11 (Science)
Mehdi Farrokhnejad, PhD'13 (Engineering)
Agnieszka Herra, PhD'12 (Arts and Humanities)
Jeffrey Law, MSc'12 (Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry)
Julie Peters, PhD (Social Science)
James Restrepo, PhD (Arts and Humanities)

A total of 3,000 scholarships are awarded annually throughout Ontario. Western has approximately 400 each year.

Rewarding Superior Academic Achievement
These graduate awards recognize exceptionally talented students. An OGS rewards superior academic performance and research potential. Recipients must be ‘A’ students who have passed a province-wide competitive review process based on their marks, references, research plans, and communication skills. An Ontario Graduate Scholarship may be held for a maximum of two years by a Master’s student and four years by a Doctoral student. These graduate awards are highly sought after and Western enjoys one of the highest allocation rates in the entire province for these prestigious scholarships.
