Q: How long have you been an advisor in this field?
A: I have been a lawyer since 1989 and in this field pretty much since 1990, so 16 years.
Q: Do you have experience advising clients who have arranged planned gifts? For how many years?
A: Yes, certainly for basically that same time period.
Q: Do you have specialized training in gift planning?
A: I practice in the area of estates law and have done so for approximately 18 years. I have attended and given many seminars on gift planning and legal issues and issues for not-for-profits and charitable organizations in this respect.
The Gift Planning Office thanks Anne for joining her Lerners colleague and LFT Ambassador David Fischer in making a professional development presentation to our colleagues in the Department of Alumni Relations & Development at Western.
Q: What ethical/professional code(s) do you follow in your work?
A: We are bound by the Rules of Practice of the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Q: Have you made arrangements for a personal planned gift?
A: Yes.
Q: What is your personal philosophy of philanthropy, and gift planning, specifically?
A: This cannot be answered in an e-mail, but very generally I believe in giving how you can, financially or otherwise, and my track record for volunteering in particular speaks for itself. I personally prefer to give more (money or otherwise) to organizations that are particularly meaningful to me rather than spreading out fewer dollars to many groups.
Q: How are you involved in your community?
A: I have been involved in many areas. Most recently, I have ended a nine-year term on the Women's Christian Association (WCA), after spending years seven and eight as Chair and year nine as past-Chair. The WCA owns and operates Wellspring London and Region; McCormick NEWS, which is a long-term care facility; and the Alzheimer Outreach Services, on the site of McCormick NEWS, which offers day programs, respite programs, and support programs related to dementia. During my term we built the new McCormick NEWS on Kains Road, which is a beautiful facility. I have served on the Alzheimer Society of London and Middlesex (was Chair for two years), the Parkwood Hospital Foundation, among other boards. There are other committees over the years as well. I am presently determining my future involvements but do sit on the board of the Forest City Gymnastics Club.
Q: Are you a member of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners – locally and/or nationally?
A: Yes.
