The Parents’ Fund provides unlimited possibilities

Alexander YanAlexander Yan feels lucky he is excelling in his academics at Western and enjoying himself at the same time. The third-year student in Pathology and Toxicology says scholarships, such as the one he received through The Parents’ Fund, have motivated him to continue working hard towards his dream of attending medical school, while also taking advantage of the best student experience Western has to offer.

“I have worked hard throughout university, and I am grateful to be acknowledged for my work. Every bit of encouragement is greatly appreciated,” says the Toronto-native.

Parents of Western students have donated almost $3.5 million to
The Parents’ Fund since it was established in 1990. Awards are given to students in second, third or fourth year who have achieved a minimum 75% average in the previous year while demonstrating leadership in the community and participating in extra-curricular activities.

Alexander’s activities include the Biology Undergraduate Society (BUGS), teaching assistant for the Department of Mathematics, and participating in the Kendo (Japanese swordsmanship) club.

“Student awards provide educational opportunities, but also give students like myself the resolve to move forward toward our goals, aim to reach the limits of human thinking, and make our contributions to society, while enjoying ourselves at the same time,” says Alexander.

Western is committed to ensuring adequate financial resources are available to talented students. Approximately 45% of Western students need financial assistance. While Western devotes more than $13 million annually for student aid, it’s not enough. This is where donors to The Parents’ Fund make a difference.

Over the years, The Parents’ Fund has supported student scholarships, needs-based bursaries, computer equipment, labs and library enhancements. In the 2008/09 academic year, The Parents’ Fund helped provide 35 students with scholarships and financial needs-based bursaries.

Lillian Jacoby has been donating to The Parent’s Fund since 2008. Her daughter, Vanessa, is a master’s student in the Faculty of Social Science. Lillian feels it’s important to support her daughter’s experience by enriching the school she is attending. “The extras Western provides aren’t in the budget,” says Lillian. “I feel parents and alumni need to support the school, even with a small amount, in order for the University to retain great professors and continue providing an exceptional quality of education and experience to its students.”
