2009/10 Hutchinson Visiting Industrial
Professor chosen

The transformation and enhancement of Earth Sciences into the program where the next generation of leaders in resource geological studies are taught took another step forward with the announcement that Dr. John Armstrong will be the 2009/10 holder of the Hutchinson Visiting Industrial Professor.

Armstrong holds a PhD and Honours BSc from Western in Geology. He is currently Senior Geologist with Stornoway Diamond Corporation. He brings more than 15 years of experience in various aspects of the natural resource industry including exploration, mining and government.

Prior to joining Stornoway he worked as a Diamond Geologist for the Northwest Territories and Nunavut with the Canadian Government. During his time there he initiated the compilation and publication of all publicly available diamond indicator mineral data, airborne geophysics, and drillhole data for the prolific diamond-producing Slave Craton. John is directly involved with Stornoway's current project portfolio and project generation group. He is also responsible for numerous new kimberlite discoveries on the Aviat, Qilaugaq, and Wales Island projects in eastern Nunvavut, Canada.

This position builds upon Dick Hutchinson’s well-regarded ability to foster partnerships and encourage both industry and students to embrace new ideas and theories. In this Professor John will enhance interactions between students, teachers and researchers with geologists in industry.
